Bergson, Henri (1851-1949; Nobel Prize in Literature): Bergson was a major philosopher who initiated what he called the Theory of Duration. He rejected what he saw as the overly mechanistic predominant view of causality. He convinced many thinkers that immediate experience and intuition are more important than rationalism and science for understanding reality. He considered the appearance of novelty as a result of pure undetermined creation. Bergson also regarded planning ahead for the future as impossible, since time itself unravels unforeseen possibilities. Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were often meeting at the Café de Flore in Saint Germain, Paris. First Anarchist, Resistant during the Nazi occupation, he stood on the left side of politics but criticized Soviet Communism as well as the use of Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. De Beauvoir, Simone (1908-1986): Writer, Existantialist philosopher, political activist, feminist, and social theorist, Simone de Beauvoir lived with Jean-Paul Sartre but never accepted to marry him. She was also know to have female lovers. Originally published in parts in Les Temps Modernes, a political journal founded by Sartre, De Beauvoir's Le Deuxième Sexe became a worldwide successful book. She argued that the "woman" is made as the "other" by the male society, the same way as for races, religions, etc. The Second Sex prescribed a moral revolution set from feminist existantialism.
